As you reach your 30’s and 40’s, you may notice that your menstrual bleeding is irregular or heavier than normal. You may also experience other associated symptoms such as increased headaches, bad cramps, exhaustion, nausea, moodiness, and other physical and/or emotional tolls that might keep you from going to work or having sex. This happens sometimes as your body prepares itself for menopause. The NovaSure® endometrial ablation procedure can lighten or even stop your period quickly, safely and easily by gently removing the lining of the uterus that causes the bleeding.
The NovaSure endometrial ablation procedure can be done right in our office at any time during your menstrual cycle, even if you are bleeding. Before beginning the actual procedure, we will give you a pregnancy test to make sure you are not currently pregnant. You may also be given an anti-inflammatory medicine 1-2 hours before the procedure to help ease any discomfort.
Although this is a non-surgical procedure and does not require general anesthesia, a local anesthetic may be injected into your uterus. Next, we will slightly open your cervix and insert a slender wand, which extends a triangular mesh device into the uterus. The mesh will slowly expand so that it fits the size and shape of your uterus. Precisely measured radio frequency energy is delivered through the mesh for about 90 seconds, which works to remove the lining of your uterus that causes the bleeding. The mesh device is then pulled back into the wand, which is removed quickly from your body. The entire procedure usually takes less than 5 minutes.
Following the NovaSure procedure, it is safer to have someone drive you home. Most women return to normal activities the very next day and report little to no pain. Some have experienced cramps, which can usually be alleviated with the use of heating pads.
NovaSure offers a solution to heavy bleeding without the use of hormones or the risks associated with a hysterectomy. According to its manufacturers, more than 2 million women have trusted NovaSure to help ease their heavy bleeding, and 90% of them report a dramatic decrease, or an altogether stop in menstrual bleeding. Pregnancy is still a risk among NovaSure patients, and those who do become pregnant once this procedure is done may have increased risk with the pregnancy.
