“Infertility” is when a couple fails to get pregnant after one year of unprotected sex. It is a common problem for women in the United States – about 12% of women between the ages of 15 and 44 years have difficulty getting pregnant or carrying the pregnancy to term.

Several things need to occur in order to achieve a successful pregnancy. First, an egg must be released from an ovary (ovulate). Second, a sperm must fertilize with the released egg. Then the fertilized egg must travel through the fallopian tube toward the uterus. Finally, the fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation). If any of these processes fails to occur, then infertility may result.

Infertility can be either the woman or the man’s issue (or both), so it’s important to consider all aspects. For women, some underlying issues that may cause infertility include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), diminished ovarian reserve (DOR), premature ovarian insufficiency (POI)/premature menopause, or menopause. It could also be affected by blocked fallopian tubes (tubal occlusion), which could be caused by a history of certain types of sexually transmitted diseases, endometriosis, past ruptured appendicitis, or past abdominal surgery. Another issue affecting women’s infertility may be the physical characteristics of the uterus. This can be investigated in our private offices via a hysteroscopy or via other methods.  (See FemVue.)

We will talk with you and/or your partner about what the best next steps are in regards to your infertility. Sometimes medicine such as Clomiphene citrate (Clomid®*) will be prescribed, other times different methods will be considered such as surgery. In the end, you can be rest assured that we will put your situation and health at top priority and will consider all healthy means to help you get the results you and your partner have always been dreaming about.

Let’s talk.
