September News 2016

National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Pap smears DO NOT detect ovarian cancer. To date, there isn't a single adequate screening test for this disease that is too often discovered in later stages. Our only protection is to know the symptoms and pay attention to our bodies. This awareness campaign, Take Early Action and Live, is so important. Get familiar with TEAL, know the symptoms and when to call your doctor, and be a part of local events that help spread awareness. You could save someone’s life. Talk to your doctor if the symptoms listed below last 2-3 weeks or longer. Be aware that your doctor may order a pelvic/rectal exam, a transvaginal ultrasound and a CA-125 blood test.

Subtle Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer:  Bloating, pelvic / abdominal pain, difficulty eating or quickly feeling full, urinary urgency or frequency, nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation, or diarrhea, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, backaches, weight gain.

Sad But True

  • Ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.
  • Changes in BRCA genes can raise your risk for ovarian cancer.
  • According the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, 30% of women with a BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene mutation will develop ovarian cancer by the time they turn 70 years old, compared to less than 1% of women in the general U.S. population.

Its important to know your risk of cancer because it can help you and your doctor make better decisions about your health, hopefully before cancer has a chance to grow...

Know Your Risk

Somi Javaid MD & Associates chooses to use the Myriad myRisk test because it evaluates multiple significant genes to properly test for hereditary cancer syndromes. It is a 28 gene panel that reveals an elevated risk for important cancers such as breast, ovarian, gastric, colorectal, pancreatic, melanoma, prostate and endometrial. Done in office via simple saliva test or blood draw. Take steps to potentially prevent cancer, delay its onset, or catch it at an earlier phase when outcomes and survival rates are better. Call today and ask about myRisk.
