October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast.

Facts About Breast Cancer In The United States

  • One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women.
  • Each year it is estimated that over 252,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,500 will die.
  • On average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes.
  • Over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today.

Although many types of breast cancer can cause a lump in the breast, not all do.  Many breast cancers are found on screening mammograms which can detect cancers at an earlier stage, often before they can be felt, and before symptoms develop.

That’s why it’s important to get your yearly breast exam as part of your annual, even if you do not get your pap.

We also offer The Myriad myRisk® Hereditary Cancer test  - a 28-gene panel that identifies an elevated risk for eight important cancers. To learn more, contact the office.

What are the risk factors for breast cancer?

Women with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop breast cancer. Some risk factors (such as drinking alcohol) can be avoided. But most risk factors (such as having a family history of breast cancer) can’t be avoided. Having a risk factor does not mean that a woman will get breast cancer. Many women who have risk factors never develop breast cancer.

Genetic Factors

  • Gender:  Breast cancer occurs nearly 100 times more often in women than in men.
  • Age:  Two out of three women with invasive cancer are diagnosed after age 55.
  • Race:  Breast cancer is diagnosed more often in caucasian women than women of other races.
  • Family History and Genetic Factors:  If your mother, sister, father or child has been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer, you have a higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer in the future. Your risk increases if your relative was diagnosed before the age of 50.
  • Menstrual and Reproductive History:  Early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after 55), having your first child at an older age, or never having given birth can also increase your risk for breast cancer.
  • Certain Genome Changes:  Mutations in certain genes, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, can increase your risk for breast cancer.
  • Dense Breast Tissue:  Having dense breast tissue can increase your risk for breast cancer and make lumps harder to detect.

Environmental And Lifestyle Risk Factors

  • Lack of Physical Activity:
  • Poor Diet
  • Being Overweight or Obese
  • Drinking Alcohol:  Frequent consumption of alcohol can increase your risk for breast cancer. The more alcohol you consume, the greater the risk.
  • Radiation to the Chest

What can you do to modify your risk?

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Some healthy behaviors (such as maintaining a healthy weight and exercising) may reduce the risk of breast cancer.

What is the Magic Mitt?

  • Quickly and completely removes makeup using water only.
  • Promotes the health of the skin because it does not affect the acid mantle. When this beneficial barrier is intact, it aids the skin in protecting itself from harmful and invasive bacteria.
  • Made from a new generation of specially knitted micro-fibers that are many times thinner than a human hair and able to penetrate oil films.
  • Breaks the surface tension of the oils that bond makeup to the skin while the fibers gently exfoliate.
  • The combination of warm water and micro-fibers turn the makeup into an emulsion that is easily swept away by the mitt. It will even remove mascara!
