November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

What is Pancreatic Cancer?

Pancreatic cancer starts when cells in the pancreas start to grow out of control. The pancreas is an organ that sits behind the stomach. It's shaped a bit like a fish with a wide head, a tapering body, and a narrow, pointed tail. In adults it's about 6 inches long but less than 2 inches wide. The head of the pancreas is on the right side of the abdomen (belly), behind where the stomach meets the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). The body of the pancreas is behind the stomach, and the tail of the pancreas is on the left side of the abdomen next to the spleen.

What are the symptoms of pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer may cause only vague unexplained symptoms. Abdominal or back pain, weight loss, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and/or eyes), loss of appetite, nausea, change in stool, pancreatitis and recent-onset diabetes are symptoms that may indicate pancreatic cancer.

Facts About Pancreatic Cancer In The United States

  • About 53,670 people (27,970 men and 25,700 women) will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
  • About 43,090 people (22,300 men and 20,790 women) will die of pancreatic cancer.
  • Pancreatic cancer accounts for about 3% of all cancers in the US and about 7% of all cancer deaths.

What are the risk factors of pancreatic cancer?

  • Family History
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic Pancreatitis and Hereditary Pancreatitis
  • Smoking
  • Race (Ethnicity) - African-Americans have a higher incidence of pancreatic cancer compared to individuals of Asian, Hispanic or Caucasian descent. There is also a higher incidence of pancreatic cancer among Ashkenazi Jews.
  • Age - The chance of developing pancreatic cancer increases with age. Most people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are over the age of 60.
  • Gender - Slightly more men are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer than women.
  • Diet
  • Obesity

What is the Magic Mitt?

  • Quickly and completely removes makeup using water only.
  • Promotes the health of the skin because it does not affect the acid mantle. When this beneficial barrier is intact, it aids the skin in protecting itself from harmful and invasive bacteria.
  • Made from a new generation of specially knitted micro-fibers that are many times thinner than a human hair and able to penetrate oil films.
  • Breaks the surface tension of the oils that bond makeup to the skin while the fibers gently exfoliate.
  • The combination of warm water and micro-fibers turn the makeup into an emulsion that is easily swept away by the mitt. It will even remove mascara!
