Did you know? Women are 4 times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men.
What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones, increasing the risk of sudden and unexpected fractures.
What are the risk factors for osteoporosis?
Low body weight, low estrogen levels, an irregular menstrual cycle, inadequate nutrition, lack of exercise, smoking and drinking alcohol, are all risk factors of osteoporosis. Good bone health can be achieved by eliminating these factors.
Postmenopausal women, typically 50 years +, have lower levels of estrogen as their ovaries have stopped producing this hormone. Low estrogen levels are associated with bone loss. Healthcare providers can provide bone density tests. If you have a family history of osteoporosis it is important to ask for this test at this stage of your life.
Until about age 30, a person normally builds more bone than he or she loses. During the aging process, bone breakdown begins to outpace bone buildup, resulting in a gradual loss of bone mass. Once this loss of bone reaches a certain point, a person has osteoporosis.
How Is Osteoporosis Related to Menopause?
There is a direct relationship between the lack of estrogen during perimenopause and menopause and the development of osteoporosis. Early menopause (before age 40) and any prolonged periods in which hormone levels are low and menstrual periods are absent or infrequent can cause loss of bone mass.
